Gyrenes deny FNU a win at home

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2025) — Conquistador women's soccer (0-3-1) suffered a 5-0 defeat to The Sun Conference's Ave Maria University Gyrenes (4-4-1). Florida National stands at 2-4-1 against AMU since the 2017 season.

In the first half, AMU wasted no time getting on the board, thanks to an unassisted goal by Claire Wrobleski just past the eight-minute mark. Cate Cox followed closely behind with a 17th-minute score, two minutes before Catherine Dalton made it a 3-0 affair. Meanwhile, the Conquistadors struggled against AMU's physicality, allowing two Gyrene corner kicks before the half came to a close. Latyfath Ubeda tallied both of FNU's shots in the opening 45, while AMU totaled nine shots.

After a short halftime, FNU retook the field at Milander Park but faced a tough stretch of soccer as the half dragged along. Ava Conforti made it a 4-0 AMU lead using a rebounded ball off keeper Andrea Oropeza to sneak in another demoralizing goal. Three minutes later, in the 75th minute, Conforti streaked a pass from the right to the center right of the field, setting up Julia Hyland for another AMU goal.

In the final period, FNU recorded no shots, but Oropeza did post an impressive six saves in her first start this season.
