Men’s soccer scores first win under Maestas Bohn

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2025) — Florida National (1-0-2) had an electric night in Ave Maria, Fla., earning a 3-1 win over the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (0-2-1). This Labor Day triumph was FNU's first win of 2025 and its first under head coach Phillip Maestas Bohn.

In the opening half, FNU drew first blood on an impressive cross-field set up by Christian Omar Hernandez. Mateo Cigaina followed up an impressive two-goal performance against Warner University on Aug. 29 with a stunning goal to put FNU up 1-0 in the 28th minute. FNU controlled most of the tempo of the match in the period, tallying 12 shots and four corners, while AMU had just four shots in the opening 45.

Despite an overwhelming effort on defense, FNU conceded a goal in the closing minute of the first. Brandon Gomez used a block shot that rebounded at his feet to sneak a shot past the hands of FNU's Vitor Caetano Pedrosa. Caetano had the shot in his hands for a moment before it fell past the goal line for an AMU score.

With the game leveled at one apiece, the second half was a whole new ball game for the visiting Conquistadors. David Luque Rivero got FNU back in front with an unassisted goal just six minutes into play. Luque used his body well to protect the ball from AMU's back line in the congested penalty area and found the perfect spot to place his shot, where goalkeeper Andrija Vujakovic could do little to stop FNU's second goal in Gyrene territory.

FNU continued its attack, making it a two-score lead with a goal from newcomer Thomas Alexander Meredith just two minutes after Luque's goal. Inclement weather and lightning in the area forced the contest to stop with just over 15 minutes left in the game. At around 8:50 p.m. local time, play resumed, and it didn't take long for Luque to score his second goal of the game to put the Gyrenes on ice.

FNU ended the match with 21 shots, seven corners and Caetano posted his first win at the net with a save on two shots faced. Notably, goalkeeper Joaquin Di Julio played the final 22 minutes of the match and maintained a clean sheet. This is the tenth consecutive victory for FNU against the Gyrenes, as the Conquistadors remain undefeated against AMU since its inaugural season in 2015.
