Conquistadors claim 1-1 tie at Lester Brown Park

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2025) — Florida National women's soccer (0-2-1) recorded its first tie of the 2025 season against the Florida Memorial University Lions (2-1-1) Thursday. Notably, men's soccer scored a draw against the Lions the previous day, 2-2.

FNU and the Lions played each other this season on Sept. 10, but had to cancel the match 67 minutes in when lightning shut down the contest. FNU picked up right where they left off in the early goings Thursday, after newcomer Latyfath Ubeda laced a perfect pass to striker Delmis Reyes Amaya for the first goal of the game in the 14th minute.

The Conquistadors were able to keep this advantage for the remainder of the half, recording four shots before halftime. FMU was aggressive throughout the entire half, recording a game-leading six shots, forcing five saves from goalkeeper Sarah Layrennys Lugo Castillo

In the second period, drama ensued 10 minutes into the frame after Jada Samuels used a crossing pass by Jayda Simmons to level the game at one score apiece. FNU's luck continued to trend in the wrong direction, and in the 69th, Lugo was assessed a straight red card after a diving tackle to stop an FMU forward from shooting into a wide-open net.

Veteran Andrea Oropeza stepped in for Lugo for the remainder of the match, and FNU's defense was able to sneak away with the draw despite facing 18 FMU shots in the final 45 minutes. FNU had no shots in the second half, and the Lions owned all eight of the corners awarded in the game.

Up Next: Florida National has its home opener set for Sept. 23 against Ave Maria University.
