Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Brenda Bogle

FNU goes undefeated at USCAA Tip-Off in back-to-back seasons

MONACA, Pa. (Aug. 30, 2025) — Florida National volleyball (6-7) completed a near-perfect weekend at the USCAA Tip-Off, recording a 3-0 win against Penn State Greater Allegheny (0-2), a 3-1 win versus Kent State University Tuscarawas (1-1) and a 3-0 triumph opposite Christendom College (1-2).

FNU's first match of the day saw the Conquistadors record a sweeping 25-7, 25-14 and 25-10 victory over the Lions. In the opener, FNU jumped to an 18-4 lead late thanks to eight combined kills from Ariana Long and Chriselle Ferdinand. FNU was firing on all cylinders and was able to close the set on a 6-3 run before Kitula Amaya Morales's second successful attack ended the period.

The next two sets were more of the same for FNU, as the team out of Hialeah, Fla., posted 21 kills while allowing just nine for the Lions down the stretch. Long and freshman Grace Leffler were clutch at the net with an assisted block apiece, keeping the Lions at a -.083 hitting percentage in the third. The Conquistadors headed to their second match with 40 kills, 12 of which came from Ferdinand, and 24 digs.

Game two in the 1 p.m. slot was FNU's first taste of adversity, splitting the first two frames against KSU Tuscarawas. The Eagles outlasted their NAIA opponent in set one, 25-20, behind three kills from Allie Snyder. FNU seemed out of rhythm early, posting a -.057 hitting percentage with six errors and just four kills.

In-game adjustments did the trick, as the Conquistadors took control of the next three sets. FNU posted 18 kills in the second and had two attacking errors for an impressive 25-14 win to tie the match. Ferdinand and Ivette Sandoval connected for six huge kills in the second and changed the trajectory of the game through the final two periods. Set three was thrilling as FNU held on for a five-point win thanks to five kills from Morales.

Elizabeth Keller's service error ended the third, and FNU took care of business in the fourth to move to 2-0 on the day. KSU was held to 11 points in a must-win fourth frame, and Florida National ended the match with 47 kills and 73 digs.

In the final match of the afternoon, the Conquistadors took care of business against the Christendom Crusaders with 25-15, 25-13, 25-12 routs. Taysha Ortega and Sandoval combined for 21 assists, while Ferdinand continued her big run with nine of FNU's 29 kills. The Crusaders had a less-than-ideal performance, recording 18 attacking errors and 15 kills.

Up Next: FNU has another regular season tournament in the works, heading to the NCF Mighty Banyan VolleyPalooza for three matches starting Sept. 5.
