Kopitzki’s singles victory denied Barry a 7-0 win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2025) — Florida National (0-1) suffered a 6-1 loss to NCAA DII Barry University (2-0) at the Buccaneer Tennis Center Wednesday. Barry rolled through all three doubles matches, but FNU avoided the sweep after Lukas Nico Kopitzki outlasted Barry junior Gui Da Matta in the longest singles match of the afternoon.

The Buccaneers made quick work of FNU's pairs in the doubles portion of the competition. Experienced Conquistador duo Ignacio Acosta and David Santamaria posted the best effort in their 6-3 loss to BU's Riccardo Trione and Thomas Machado. Luigi Stefanacci and Daniele Trentin posted a 6-2 loss at the hands of Gabriele Felline and Tim Riedel.

Notably, Leo Caill and Yan Kodjoed had the fastest finish in doubles play with their 6-2 win over Anis Kerfah and Alejandro Suarez.

Things didn't improve for FNU in singles play, as Barry made quick work of five out of six matches. Suarez showed resilience in a well-contested 6-3, 6-3 loss to Hayze Loop. Acosta and Kerfah fell flat in their respective matches, while Trentin had a solid 6-3 loss in set one before losing the match with a 6-0 performance later on.

As each Conquistador began to fall, one FNU player was left standing in a heated battle against BU's Da Matta. Kopitzki came up big in the opening set, outplaying Da Matta to claim a clutch 7-5 win in set one. His dominance continued in set two, as the German posted a strong 6-3 win to clinch FNU's lone point of the afternoon.

Kopitzki is now just the second FNU player to secure an individual victory against Barry in spring competition, the program's first coming from Stefanacci over Loop last season.

Up Next: The Conquistadors look to regroup with an early afternoon match against the Lynn University Knights on Feb. 18.
