Conquistadors drop to 0-3, fall to No. 24 AMU

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2025) — Florida National men's tennis (0-3) found little success in its 4-1 loss to the NAIA's No. 24-ranked Ave Maria University Gyrenes (2-2) Wednesday. For the second time this season, a singles win from Lukas Nico Kopitzki helped the Conquistadors avoid a road sweep. 

In doubles play, partners Luigi Stefanacci and Gustavo Masu impressed with their 6-3 win over AMU's Danil Mishchanin and Andreu Solvia. The Conquistadors did not have much luck in their other two matches, as FNU duo Anis Kerfah and Alejandro Suarez fell 6-3 to Anderson Duggan and Joao Felipe Almeida. Kopitzki and Mats-Jonathan Werner had similar struggles in their 6-3 loss to Gyrene pair Juan and Pedro Garcia. 

Singles play saw Kopitzki shine with his 6-1, 6-2 trouncing of Juan Garcia. This proved to be the highlight of the evening for FNU, as three singles losses clinched the match for the home team. Gianmarco Punzo made easy work of Werner for a 6-3, 6-1 win. Veteran Ignacio Acosta was shut down in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Pedro Garcia, and David Santamaria went down similarly to AMU's Duggan 6-3, 6-2. 

Historically, FNU has not had the best luck against the AMU Gyrenes. Ave Maria has secured a win in its last five meetings against FNU and has only lost to FNU twice in the last six years. 

Up Next: Tennis will be in Key Biscayne, Fla., March 17 at the Crandon Park Tennis Center for an afternoon match against (RV) Missouri Baptist University.
