Early foul woes help AMU defeat Conquistadors

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Dec. 3, 2025) — Conquistador women's basketball's (3-5) slow start and early foul trouble headlined its 71-46 loss to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (4-4). Florida National relied on 17 points from Jaylyn Laguna in a game where the Gyrenes took 30 shots from the free-throw line.

To start this rematch in Ave Maria, Fla., FNU looked to redeem its 84-61 season-opening loss at home on Oct. 29. The Conquistadors were outscored 27-15 and by seven in the third at Bucky Dent Park.

Wednesday night's game was another strong start for the Gyrenes, as FNU did not post a bucket until Laguna converted a three with three minutes left in the first. In that time, AMU rattled off 10 unanswered points and ended the first with 11 combined points from Ashley Chilson and Elena Barnes. Laguna knocked down her second three before time expired in the first, making it a 15-8 ball game heading to the second.

The second saw FNU catch the foul bug, committing eight personal fouls in the quarter. The Gyrenes capitalized on this with 12 free throw attempts and six points. These easy buckets were enough to quench a six-point frame from guard Ziul Gonzalez. Jessica Carreras played the final section of the half with four personals and managed not to foul out until the final few minutes of the fourth. Notably, AMU's bench was stout with nine points from Gabby Beauperthuy and Raegan Cooper before both teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

The third was AMU's best 10 minutes of basketball in the game, as FNU was outscored 24-13. Beauperthuy proved to be FNU's Achilles Heel, scoring 12 points thanks in part to five of five shooting from the charity strip. FNU shot 40% from the field with just six made field goals. Their only free-throw attempts went unconverted after Hermione Hicks missed at the line before the third came to a close.

The final period was Laguna's time to shine, as the freshman tallied nine points to lead all players in the period. To AMU's credit, six different players helped keep FNU at bay in the final minutes, and Beauperthuy added five to end the night with 27 points. Chilson was stellar with 16 and Barnes posted 14 in 36 minutes.

Along with Laguna's 17, Gonzalez and Maria De Gracia Karamanites ended their night with nine points apiece, while Valeria Castro led the charge off the bench with seven on 3-5 shooting.

Up Next: FNU returns home on Dec. 5 to face the Fort Lauderdale Eagles.
