Volleyball puts up valiant fight in season-ending loss to Bulldogs

SEWARD, Neb. (Nov. 22, 2025) — Florida National volleyball (17-19) displayed a competitive and gritty performance against the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Concordia University Bulldogs (25-3) Saturday afternoon. In FNU's return to the Opening Round of the NAIA Tournament since 2021, the Conquistadors had an early lead in the opening set before falling 3-0 in the Cornhusker State.

FNU's road to Seward was paved by a second consecutive trip to the championship match of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament, where FNU earned one of two auto-bids to nationals despite falling to Simpson University 3-1 in the title match. This set up a 2 p.m. match against the No. 4-ranked team in the country, and FNU entered this must-win contest ready to play for its postseason lives.

In the opener, FNU earned a 3-1 lead on a kill by freshman Chriselle Ferdinand set up by senior setter Ivette Sandoval. Freshmen continued to lead the way for FNU early, as back-to-back kills from Lily Hitchcock and Grace Leffler kept FNU in the lead 7-5 after a slow start from the Bulldogs. Successful terminations from Keelee Okoro and Kitula Morales had FNU up 9-6, but Concordia went on a 4-0 run that woke up their offense about midway through the frame.

Ava Greene and Kyla Scott combined for eight kills in the first to chip away at FNU's momentum until Concordia iced the first point of the match with a block by Ella Waters and Greene, 25-17.

Set two was a slower start for FNU, as Concordia was able to up its intensity in front of a lively home crowd. The Bulldogs grabbed a 2-0 lead on a 25-15 win in the second frame and were paced by four kills from Ashley Keck and Maddie Paulsen. Lily Psencik was all over the court with seven assists on the Bulldogs' 16 kills in the frame. FNU relied heavily on a pair of kills from Ferdinand and Morales early to make it a 5-4 Concordia lead in the second but just could not sustain its offense for longer stretches. Keck ended the frame on a kill from Psencik, and the home team looked to end the match in the third.

FNU's final set of the 2025 season was highlighted by four kills from Ferdinand despite the Conquistadors falling 25-10. Concordia earned 16 kills to bring its game total to 45 and ended the match hitting .350. Paulsen's seventh kill of the match was the game-winning point as FNU seniors Taysha Ortega and Sandoval tallied 19 assists in their final match as Conquistadors.

Ferdinand ended her first collegiate season with a team-high 369 kills, and Ariana Long added nine digs to push her team-leading total to 454. Notably, Sandoval ends her spectacular FNU career with 641 assists in 2025.
