FNU comes up big in 1-0 win over Banyans

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2025) — Women's soccer standout Angelina Carreno scored her second goal in as many games to lead Florida National to its second win in 2025. The Conquistadors defeated the New College of Florida Banyans 1-0 on the pitch of Ted Hendricks Stadium at Milander Park Monday.

Carreno entered Monday's match as the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defensive Player of the Week after falling to the NCAA Division II Edward Waters University Tigers the previous Monday. Against the Banyans, FNU saw itself in a tough deadlock after the first half. The Conquistadors were aggressive early, tallying 11 shots in the opening period while allowing just three shots from the Banyans.

Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza got the start and recorded a save despite a relatively quiet performance from the Banyans on offense. FNU's defense was a big part of the Banyans' struggles, as Carreno and Enma Amaya were so good at keeping NCF forwards off balance. Gabriela Bortolon was particularly great in the midfield, stringing together a pair of good passes to Delmis Reyes Amaya that just missed the back of the net early.

In the second half, FNU was finally able to break through directly following the chaos of a dangerous corner kick from Latyfath Ubeda. Forward Natalya Laura Paula dove for a rebounded ball and laid the ball right at the feet of Carreno on the left side of the penalty box. Carreno was able to pelt a high-arching shot past the goalkeeper Maria Schatzl to give NU the lead in the 68th minute.

The Conquistadors, collectively, stayed disciplined down the stretch and used as much time off the clock whenever they could to shorten possession time for the visiting Banyans. FNU ended the half with two shots and two corner kicks, while NCF had three corner kicks and five shots through the entire match.

FNU is now 1-0-1 against NCF since their first meeting in 2023.

Up Next: Women's soccer awaits selections to either the CAC Tournament or the USCAA National Championship set for early November.
