FNU wins first match of 2025, defeats Carolina 5-3

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Oct. 16, 2025) — Florida National women's soccer (1-5-1, 1-1-0) survived a shootout in game one of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic, toppling the Carolina University Bruins (3-8-3, 0-1-0) 5-3. This is the Conquistadors' first win under head coach Gonzalo Rudolf and CAC victory of 2025.

The Conquistadors got off to their best start this season, netting two first-half goals against the Bruins after scoring three goals all season. In the second minute of the contest, Latyfath Ubeda grabbed her second goal in the last three games, making it a 1-0 affair on an unassisted score. About seven minutes later, FNU's lead doubled after sophomore Gabriela Bortolon snuck a shot past goalkeeper Waleska Gonzalez.

FNU's chance at its first win of 2025, however, was threatened by a 14th-minute goal from Bruin Chelsea Prescott. Things continued to trend downward, as Cheyenne Brittain tied the match with six minutes left in the period for her first goal of the season. FNU went into halftime with six shots, while the Bruins clawed their way to seven shots and three corner kicks.

In the final 45 minutes, real drama ensued when Alex Anderson gave the Bruins their first lead of the match on a 51-minute goal. This tested FNU's metal toughness, but to its credit, the team leveled the game on Sara Borges Rodrigues' first goal of the season.

Thanks to a pass from Natalya Laura Paula, leading goalscorer Delmis Reyes Amaya recorded her third score in six games at the 68th-minute mark. Reyes and Mia Isabella Santana connected later on for Santana's goal in the 72nd, her heroic efforts putting the final touches on an impressive win for the visiting Conquistadors.

Notably, goalkeeper Sarah Layrennys Lugo Castillo had four saves and faced seven Bruin shots on goal in her first win since transferring in 2024. The Conquistadors ended the match with 13 shots and zero corners.
