Conquistadors and Gyrenes settle for a 1-1 draw Saturday

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Sept. 28, 2024) - Florida National's women's soccer team (2-3-2) earned its second draw of the 2024 season, ending a 4:30 p.m. game against Ave Maria University (4-1-3) with a 1-1 draw. Both goals in the match came within 15 seconds of each other in the first half. Notably, this is the first time a stalemate was the final result between these two NAIA institutions.

In the opening period, FNU started the ball game with an unassisted score from Sara Borges Rodrigues. The freshman put her team ahead despite a crowd of white jerseys circling her in the 18-yard box with 12 minutes elapsed in the match.

Despite the lead, FNU's advantage was short-lived after Catherine Dalton leveled things once again 12:15 into the half. Ave Maria took advantage of a defensive error right after Borges' goal to avoid a crushing loss at home. Both sides continued to battle it out in the middle of the field, as FNU tallied seven shots to AMU's four. Both teams attempted one corner before heading to the benches for halftime.

Once play resumed in the second, FNU lost control of the contest. The visitors fell behind in time of possession and offensive opportunities. The Gyrenes took 15 shots in the half and held the Conquistadors to just one. FNU denied the Gyrenes at every turn, thanks to stellar defense from goalkeeper Hailey Llijin. The transfer from Florida Memorial University, had three crucial saves in the contest, including a leaping grab to halt what would've been a goal for AMU's Kana Mateaki.

Following this contest, AMU remains the series leader with a 3-2-1 record against FNU dating back to August 2017. This is the third time AMU was held to one goal in that same time frame.

Up Next: FNU women's soccer host RV St. Thomas on Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. from Milander Park.
