Women’s soccer ends battle versus Edward Waters in a stalemate

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2024) - Florida National (2-3-1) continues to move in the right direction following a 2-2 draw against the NCAA DII Edward Waters University Tigers (2-4-1). This is the fourth time FNU has ended a match versus EWU in a tie, and the second time in two seasons it was in 2-2 fashion.

FNU's Delmis Reyes Amaya had a breakout game, scoring both Conquistadors goals. EWU's Rose-Bertude Rosinvil impressed the crowd with her speedy footwork on the wings. In the first half, Dahien Cabrera opened scoring in the fourth minute for the Tigers thanks to a leading pass from Dadie Cherenfant.

FNU did not let this early score deter them, as Reyes Amaya delivered a beautiful goal to level the game once again after a quick pass down the right side of the field from veteran Victoria Castillo. Rosinvil continued to be a problem for FNU, as the freshman defender out paced Conquistador defenders in the 18-yard box.

Rosinvil finally broke through on a stolen pass near the penalty box for an unassisted goal in the 27th minute. Leading 2-1, EWU conceded another goal to Reyes Amaya, this time on an assist from Gabriela Bortolon Brito six minutes later.

FNU's goal triggered a goalie change for the Tigers and Olivia Galloway was replaced by Sheila Pascual for the remainder of the contest. Both teams returned to their benches for halftime 12 minutes later, and FNU had seven shots to EWU's 11. The Conquistadors had only attempted one corner while the Tigers recorded three.

In the second half, both teams leaned on their defense. EWU had an impressive 17 shots but were denied at every turn. Hailey Llijin continues to find her stride in the net, recording nine saves after facing 11 shots on goal.

FNU had two players accessed yellow cards in Sara Borges Rodrigues and Tyanna Mack Simon. EWU's head coach, Abbey Golden, was given a yellow after arguing a foul with the head referee. FNU ended the afternoon with 11 total shots and two corners, while the Tigers headed home to Jacksonville, Fla., with 28 shots and six corners.

Up Next: FNU is in Ave Maria, Fla., at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 for a match versus the AMU Gyrenes.
