Florida National exits classic undefeated

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2024) - Florida National (2-3-0) grabbed its second win of the season, outlasting Florida College (0-6-1) 1-0 on its final day at the FNU Classic. The Conquistadors improved to 2-0 in Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) play and came into this contest fresh off a 3-0 rout of the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers the previous day.

The Conquistadors got ahead early thanks to a goal from freshman phenom Gabriela Bortolon Brito. The Brazilian laced a perfect shot into the top right corner of the net thanks to a cross pass from Natalya Laura Paula in the 18-yard box.

This proved to be all the Conquistadors needed to close out the game offensively. Both teams combined for nine shots in the first half, while the Falcons put up nine attempts in the second half. Goalkeeper Hailey Llijin faced immense pressure in the second half but reeled in three vital saves to keep the Falcons scoreless.

Frustrations mounted for the visitors as Claribel Hernandez picked up a yellow card in the second half after the Falcons continued to run into the wall that is FNU's backline. Florida College dominated the corner kick battle with two in the second half and five total for the entire contest. FNU was held to just one corner kick attempt but managed the clock very well in the second half to send the Falcons home with its sixth loss of 2024.

Notably, FNU recorded 13 shots while the Falcons had 11.
