Conquistadors lose hard-fought battle to PBA Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2024) — Conquistador men's basketball (0-5) was forced to watch the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish (3-0) salt away an 80-71 victory at the Rubin Arena Saturday. The Sailfish went 8-8 from the charity stripe in the closing seconds to hand FNU its fifth loss of 2024.

The opening half was a prelude to a back-and-forth battle on the horizon between these two Florida powerhouses. FNU trailed 33-25 at the break thanks to three made free throws from Delvin Espinoza. When play resumed in the second, FNU trailed by 15 late until they went on a run highlighted by a clutch transition three from Jeremy Arnum to make it a 72-67 PBA lead.

Unfortunately, Florida National only had one minute on the clock to make magic happen for the first time this season. After Arnum's next attempt at the three ball missed the mark, FNU continued to play the foul game, much to the joy of PBA's shooters. The Sailfish's perfect performance from the line helped them finish the evening 15-17.

A shortcoming that proved to change the momentum of this contest was FNU's struggles securing rebounds. FNU lost the boards race 45-28. Notably, center Jesus Rivas established himself underneath the rim with nine rebounds in 20 minutes on the hardwood.

Arnum was a real force on the court, leading all FNU scores with 20 points on five made threes. He ended the night shooting 50%, generated four steals and grabbed an assist. Caelum Ethridge also posted huge numbers with 19 points, six rebounds, and four timely dimes. FNU went 22-56 from the field and connected on 11 threes.

Up Next: Men's basketball has its final exhibition of 2024 on Nov. 26 at Nova Southeastern. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
