LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Nov. 11, 2024)— The Conquistadors (5-8-2) fell short of a fourth consecutive trip to the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Men's Soccer Championship match, losing to Georgia Gwinnett College (11-5-2) 1-0. FNU conceded the only goal of the contest at the start of the second overtime period to end a challenging 2024 campaign.

In the first half, the familiarity between these two CAC powerhouses was on full display. FNU had come out on top in the last two tournament games versus GGC, including a thrilling 5-4 win in last year's semifinal round. The Grizzlies looked to avenge this heartbreaking defeat and were not giving FNU any easy looks at a goal this time around.

Florida National totaled two shots in the first half courtesy of Nicolas Martinez and Filipe Sette Ribeiro. Martinez's attempt missed wide, while Sette Ribeiro could not recreate his magical goal from the first round against Carolina University. GGC goalie Dagoberto Romero ended the match facing no shots on goal or recording any saves as the FNU offense had a tough time stringing plays together.

Things weren't any better for GGC, as the Grizzlies went to the break with just three shots. They lead the corner kick race 3-2 heading into another 45 minutes of deadlocked soccer. In the 65th minute, Mateo Mantchoff had his shot sail wide while Sette Ribeiro could not connect on his second shot attempt of the afternoon four minutes later. Senior Marcos Bakale was blocked on FNU's final push for a regulation win.

GGC's overtime performance early on was a signal of bad things to come for the Conquistadors. Defender Ricardo Delwing picked up a yellow trying to keep GGC contained at the tail end of the first and just one minute and 23 seconds of the second frame was all GGC needed to move on to the title match.

After a shot from Alejandro Contrera went wide of the mark, defender Geronimo Luna Grebe got his pass blocked and picked up by a GGC forward. This set up a dangerous pass from the right of the field to the center of the penalty box to the waiting foot of Ciro Damine. The Argentinian transfer from Keiser University confidently closed out the match after tucking a beautiful goal into the bottom left corner.

This sent GGC's bench into a frenzy, as FNU suffered a tough defeat once again in Lawrenceville, Ga. The Conquistadors are now 2-2-1 versus Georgia Gwinnett overall and end the 2024 season 3-2 against CAC opponents.
