No. 1 Southeastern Sweeps FNU in Baseball Doubleheader

LAKELAND, Fla. (February 26, 2021) – The Florida National baseball team (3-8) traveled to Lakeland, Florida, to take on the No. 1-ranked team in the nation but suffered a pair of losses as Southeastern (18-1) swept the Conquistadors in a Friday doubleheader.

In Game One, the Fire set the tone with a four-run bottom of the first, adding three runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to defeat FNU, 10-0 (7 inning).
Ezequiel Valdez Florentino led the Conquistadors with a 3-for-4 performance from the dish, including a double and a stolen base.

Thomas Hernandez (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) while striking out six in four innings of work. In Game Two, FNU looked to split the doubleheader but crooked numbers in the bottom of the third and the bottom of the sixth for the Fire led to a 9-4 loss for the Conquistadors. After SEU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, FNU responded with an RNI single by Manuel Blanco. However, the Fire added four more runs in their half of the inning taking the lead for good.

The Conquistadors tried to chip away at SEU's lead, with a homer by Francisco Perez De Leon in the top of the fourth and RBIs by both Edgar Perez and Jasiel Perez in the top of the fifth but it was not enough as FNU dropped its fifth straight. Blanco and J. Perez each went 2-for-4 while E. Perez was 1-fo-1 and Perez De Leon hit 1-for-3 in the game. Tyler Hall scored a pair of runs for the Conquistadors, batting 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Brandon Torres (0-2) was credit with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in two and two-thirds innings of action. FNU will hit the road to take on USCB in Hardeeville, South Carolina, on Tuesday, March 2. First pitch is set for noon.
