Tennis posts a winless afternoon against top-ranked STU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 10, 2026) — Florida National men's (0-5) and women's tennis (0-6) ran into a pair of tough top-25 teams Friday, falling 4-0 to the St. Thomas University Bobcats on the road. The STU women (8-11) are ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, while the men (6-9) moved up two spots to No. 20.

For the FNU men, the highlight of the afternoon was a 7-5 doubles win by pair Alejandro Suarez and Daniele Trentin versus Ivan Menendez and Pablo Olmedo. Unfortunately, STU grabbed the early 1-0 lead off doubles loss by Mats-Jonathan Werner and Dex Leyers, 6-0, and Lukas Nico Kopitzki and Mick Leyers, 6-4.

As both teams transitioned to singles play, Ignacio Joaquin Ibañez eventually fell to Mariano Alberto Hasenhkopf, 6-1, 6-2. Dex Leyers also ran into some trouble versus Jan Gewaltig, losing 6-1, 6-2. Mick Leyers' 6-0, 7-5 loss to Pierlugi Cruypemmimck was enough to claim the Senior Day victory for the Bobcats. The FNU men have dropped eight straight matches to the STU Bobcats, their last win coming during the 2018-19 season.

The Conquistador women suffered a 6-0 defeat in doubles to the pair of Celeste Deniz Reyes and Valeria Labrador Perez, opposite STU's Sezin Akin and Sachely Carerra. This loss was enough to get STU the 1-0 advantage out of the doubles portion of the competition, and Labrador Perez's 6-0, 6-0 loss to Alicia Andres Rodriguez left three matches unfinished. Notably, Julia Chodkowska showed real fight in her single against Akin, leading 5-2 before the game was called.

The Conquistador women extended their losing streak against STU to six, with their last triumph coming during the 2021-22 season.
