Women’s soccer drops season opener to Warner Friday

LAKE WALES, Fla. (Aug. 29, 2025) — Despite an early lead, Florida National (0-1-0) fell 3-1 to the Warner University Royals (1-1-0) in its 2025 debut. Junior Delmis Reyes Amaya's successful penalty attempt in the first half was FNU's lone score of the evening in its third-ever match opposite Warner.

In the first half, FNU got the hot start after a costly Royal foul in the penalty area. FNU called on their clutch number 10, forward Amaya, to step up to the marker. She did not disappoint, as the Jacksonville, Fla., native laced her first goal of 2025 with ease in the 13th minute. The tide soon turned, however, with WU's Morgan Sullivan scoring the unassisted equalizer.

Soon, Warner took a commanding lead on another Sullivan goal, this time assisted by Sabrina Bouchachia in the 22nd minute. Facing a 2-1 deficit, FNU's defense was able to lock in for the remainder of the half, not conceding any additional goals before the halftime whistle blew. Warner led the way with eight shots while FNU tallied five. The Royals owned all four corners in the frame, and FNU's starting goalkeeper, Sarah Layrennys Lugo Castillo, posted one save.

In the second half, Warner continued to get good looks from all over the pitch. With 19 minutes left in the game, Lillian Dodge scored the Royals' third goal of 2025 to put real daylight between the Royals and FNU. The Conquistadors posted two shot attempts in the final half, conceding six corners to Warner in the final 45 minutes.

Castillo ended the night with three saves, and FNU posted seven total shots.
