Florida National drops to 0-3-0 in rematch versus FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2024) - For the second time this week, Florida National has been on the wrong side of a contentious 3-2 match at Dr. Lester Brown Park. The Conquistador women's soccer team (0-3-0) fell to the Florida Memorial Lions (2-0-0) on Sept. 5 to start the 2024 season with three straight losses, a day after FNU men's soccer met a similar fate.

The first half was a relatively clean match with multiple goals scored by excellent play close to the net on breakaways. Natalya Laura Paula was the first to break the scoring drought in the 6th minute after a broken play from a corner kick. Paula slipped in a loose ball to give her team a fragile 1-0 lead. FMU tied the match on an attack led by Irati Elorduy. She played in a stellar pass to Sierra Bartley for another score by the forward in 2024.

The Conquistadors took a 2-1 lead before the half thanks to crafty work by Delmis Reyes Amaya. The Jacksonville, Fla., native pushed the ball and kicked a leading pass to freshman Gabriela Bortolon Brito. Both sides retired for halftime and Florida National looked to protect their advantage for its first victory in the second half.

What followed was a fiery period, with two red cards and seven yellow cards handed out before the final whistle blew. Captain Enma Amaya was given two yellow cards and expelled from the match. The second booking stemmed from grabbing Bartley in the penalty box and the forward went on to score on the penalty to tie the match. She also delivered the game-winning goal in the 74th minute and completed her first hat trick of the 2024 season.

FMU's Laila Ortiz Nolan got tangled up with defender Tyanna Mack Simon, resulting in a brief altercation and a red card for Nolan. FMU played conservatively for the remaining 14 minutes to win the season series versus FNU.

Up Next: FNU hosts Warner University at Milander Park next Tuesday. Play is set to begin at noon.
