Florida National captures historic victory over Carlow at the USCAA tournament

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2024) — Florida National (4-6-2) recorded the most goals and the largest margin of victory in program history to beat Carlow University (3-14-1) 9-0 at the 2024 USCAA Women's Soccer Championship. Gabriela Bortolon Brito had two goals while Delmis Reyes Amaya picked up her first hat trick of 2024.

The first half was exceptional for the Conquistadors. Carlow came into the contest fresh off a 7-0 loss to Shaw University the day before and was desperate for a win in Coraopolis, Pa. The Celtics' luck had officially run out, as FNU went up 6-0 in the first half. Reyes Amaya and Bethania Pires da Cruz picked apart Carlow's defense for unassisted goals in the first six minutes of play.

Sara Borges Rodrigues was the next Conquistador to get on the board in the 12th minute and Reyes laced her second goal four minutes later on an assist from defender Daniela Sermini. Reyes continued to shine with a stellar pass to Bortolon Brito for the Brazilian's first goal of the contest. Bortolon Brito grabbed FNU's sixth goal with four minutes left in the first, as Carlow was left reeling from FNU's offensive brilliance.

Carlow recorded six shots in the frame and goalkeeper Chelsey Giron ended the game with four saves. The freshman faced just four shots on goal and did a great job filling in for USCAA All-American Hailey Llijin

The second half was a three-score period for the Conquistadors. Defender Enma Amaya orchestrated Reyes' third and final goal for the Jacksonville, Fla., native. to get things rolling eight minutes into the half.

In the 78th minute, freshman Mia Isabella Santana converted a shot into another FNU goal thanks to a pass from forward Natalya Laura Paula. This was Santana's first goal of 2024 and sophomore Victoria Daley-Willy also broke through for her first score as a member for Florida National. Carlow ended the match with eight shots and seven saves. CU goalkeeper Lyndsey Szekely had a team-high five saves.
